In an effort to begin breaking ground on Miami World Center, MDM Development Group has submitted the plans for the first phase of development and is awaiting approval. The plan maps include the first 10 acres, which will eventually become a 27-acre urban development project. The center will include residential towers, retail shops and restaurants. Bloomingdales and Macy’s already plan on opening up stores in the center when complete.
Eight years in the making, Miami World Center has been subject to delays and residential opposition. Some residents are concerned about the layout and whether it will cut off Overtown from Biscayne Boulevard. The proposed site currently stretches from NE 6th Street to First Avenue.
WSH Partner, Tony Recio, who is currently representing Miami World Center managing partner Nitin Motwani and MDM Development Group, addressed Miami-Dade city planning board members during a meeting last week, calling the plans “transformative” considering the city has been plagued by vacant lots and urban blight. The plans also call for streetscape improvements, including wider sidewalks, street furniture and shade trees.
