Miami-Dade is in need of a new courthouse. A new courthouse designed to be safe, healthy and green; a courthouse that will be less of a burden to taxpayers than it presently is.
In its current state, the 87-year-old Miami-Dade Courthouse on Flagler is in irreparable disrepair. Plagued by wear and tear, water leaks, mold, and an outdated plumbing and electrical system that hasn’t been updated since its installation in 1950, the courthouse has had to close four and a half floors due to potential health issues associated with these issues. To fix these ailments, taxpayers would be required to pay more than $60 million in repairs alone, even after these repairs are made, Miami would still have a sub-standard courthouse.
In November voters will have the opportunity to vote YES for a new, more efficient, cost-effective courthouse. With the help of PAC, Building Blocks for Justice and its host committee, which includes WSH Founding Member Joe Serota and Partner in Charge of the Miami office Michael Popok, the PAC has been working tirelessly to raise funds for the new courthouse. So far, the organization has raised more than $750,000 and needs to raise another $1 million in the next two weeks to convince voters to support the necessity for a new building.
Absentee voters will be receiving their ballots beginning on October 6. Time is of the essence. For more information or to donate, visit Building Blocks for Justice or click here.
